Throughout the history of nursing, touch has been a hallmark for nursing care. The strategy of touch offers the nurse a way to interact with a patient in a therapeutic and healing way (Coakley, Barron, Annese, 2016). Today, nursing care is a fast pace environment that is focused on using equipment to monitor patients and passing of medications with very little time for a human connection between nurses and patients (Hardwick, Pulido, Adelson, 2012). Currently, acute care nursing is changing to a system that is more accepting of nonpharmacological approaches to the care of patients, therefore healing touch can be an intervention that nurses use for patients that is valuable (Anderson, Friesen, Swengros, Herbst, Mangione, 2017).†¦show more content†¦The nurses who participated in this study had completed at least Level One healing touch training at the Inova Health System. Participates attended focus group meetings where they were asked to provide narratives about using healing touch practices and the techniques they used. Many of the nurses said that they used healing touch everyday with their patients during every shift with only a few times that they did not use it. The nurses could find successful ways to incorporate healing touch into their practice. During this study nurses who participated were able to recognize the benefits of healing touch in creating a caring and healing relationships. When healing touch was used, nurses noticed a sense of calmness in oneself that created an environment of calm as a whole in the unit they were working on (Anderson et al., 2017). Hardwick et al. (2012) investigated the use of healing touch effects on the anxiety and pain that was present for 41 patients that underwent Bilateral Total Knee Arthroplasty. A likert scale to rate pain and the State-Trait Anxiety Inventory was used. Foley et. al (2016) conducted similar research to explore the effects of healing touch had on adult patients who have had ou tpatient surgery. Casue Of The Civil War Essay In 1850, a document called the Fugitive Slave Act was passed. Primarily, this document dealt with the reclaiming of runaway slaves. This law allowed southerners to call upon the federal government to capture runaway slaves who had fled the South and may be living in the North. The Fugitive Slave Act and the laws that went with it only caused controversy in the North. This split the North and South. In reaction to this, some northern states passed laws forbidding state officials to enforce the Fugitive Slave Law, which only angered the southern states. Northerners had become aware of the hypocrisy of slavery and became resolved to end slavery. Many abolitionists started to take action to help slaves escape. This major controversy over the runaway slaves sparked the beginning of the Civil War. Basic rights that Americans held were denied to suspected runaway slaves. One should note that even though some African Americans in the North were free, they could be considered a suspected runaway. Suspected runaway slaves, even if they were free, were denied the right to a jury and held the burden of proof; no longer where they innocent until proven guilty, they were assumed guilty. When Northerners heard that basic rights were being denied to American slaves, they wanted to end slavery immediately. America would appear to be hypocrites if they were denying the basic rights that they had fought for against Britain. This next quote is from a speech given by Frederick Douglas on the fourth of July 1852:To him American slaves your celebration is a sham; your boasted liberty an unholy license; your national greatness, swelling vanity; your sounds of rejoicing are empty and heartless; your denunciation of tyrants, brass-fronted impudence; your shouts of liberty and equality, hollow moc keryare to him mere bombast, fraud, deception, impiety, and hypocrisy a thin veil to cover up crimes which would disgrace a nation of savages (p. 178 Peoples History, Zinn). This address by Frederick Douglas stated exactly what the northern antislavery citizens saw in the South, hypocrisy and fraud. They knew that their oppression to slaves paralleled to the oppression they felt from Britain not too long ago. Since the Souths entire economy was based on the growing of cotton, and that slaves were needed to work the fields, it was apparent that the South would not ban slavery easily. Before much controversy arose, many Northern citizens did not have an opinion and remained unbiased on the issue of slavery in the South. When the Slavery Act caused a commotion in the North, writers took action to help spread the message to the unbiased citizens. Publications such as Uncle Toms Cabin, by Harriet Beecher Stowe, and antislavery newspapers and magazines, such as The Liberator, became available. These articles and stories produced a greater awareness of slavery in Northerners. As time passed, the Northerners began to take sides on the issue and the majority of them were antislavery. Debates, arguments and pushes for change got the Northerners more involved and more determined to defeat the South, which now seemed like a different country. That was how divided the North and South had become due to the Fugitive Slave Act. To try and settle slavery on their own, northerners helped slaves escape the South through something called the Underground Railroad and other extreme a bolitionists led revolts. When the northern abolitionists took action, the Civil War seemed more inevitable then ever. Northerners were stealing slaves and mobs were forming. One may think that you cannot steal people, but to the Southerners slaves were property not human beings. Harriet Tubman, a former slave, ran an organization called the Underground Railroad in which white abolitionists would house runaway slaves and then send them further North. Slaves went house to house and hid until they were safe from Southern slave owners. Southerners were outraged at the ease the slaves were able to reach the North. The laws in the new Slavery Act had helped little. Besides slaves running away, the Southerners had to worry about extreme abolitionists who formed mobs and held protests. In May of 1854, a Boston mob of abolitionists tried to save a fugitive slave, Anthony Burns, and although they were unable to save him, they had cost the government more than 100,000 dollars. Knowing that demonstrations such as the on e held for Anthony Burns would continue, the government began to try and end slavery. At this time, the Southerners, unhappy with the governments plans to abolish slavery, threatened to secede from the Union. The British employers use racism to exploit the migrant employees owing the erstwhile political superiority of Britain over most of the nations in the world. The anti-migrant work culture in Britain breaches the United Kingdom is Health and Safety at Work etc. Act 1974. This proves that the OHS in Britain i s not in full practice and requires action from the Health and Safety Executive (Ft.com. 2017). Australia was politically under Britain and her workforce faced exploitation in the hands of the British employers. The country today is a political stable democracy and this has favoured industrialisation. The nation like Britain attracts a huge number of migrants from all over the world. Reports show that the employers in Australia force their workforces to work under unsafe and unhealthy conditions like their British counterparts. The migrants are mostly made to work on construction sites and other dangerous places of work (Smith et al. 2015). This exploitative work culture of Australia has posed serious threats to occupational health and safety. It is even attracted intervention from the Fair Work Ombudsman and criticism from the media. This comparison shows that though Britain and Australia have different political backgrounds, both the countries practice exploitation on workers and the occupational health and safety laws in force (Oll-Espluga et al. 2015). Industrial culture: There exists a strong difference between the dominant industries in the United Kingdom and Australia which account for the difference in industrial culture and OHS between these two countries. The service industry is the dominant industry in the United Kingdom which allows minimum physical exploitation of employees. The other important industries in the country are manufacturing, tourism and defence. It can be pointed that these industrious are less hazardous and have safer working environment. It can also be pointed out that the industries in the United come under the purview of the European Union which enforces safer working conditions. The factories in the United have shown good working practices where the employers provide healthier working conditions. The employers even provide safety trainings to their employees which have helped to curd accidents (Eurofound.europa.eu. 2017). Compared to the industrial structure of Britain dominated by service industry, Australias industry is dominated by mining and energy. These industries are extremely hazardous and employ large number of labourers who have to do dangerous tasks. This leaves scopes for exploitation of the workers in the hands of the mine owners(Yazdani et al. 2015). The Australian employers have been known to exploit their migrant employees. This hostile work culture in the industries of Australia has attracted enforcement of strong legal actions from the government. This comparison between the industrial cultures of Britain and Australia shows that the former has healthier industrial work culture than the latter. This also shows that the industrial culture of Britain allows greater degree of Occupational Health and Safety (OHS) (MacIntyre et al. 2014). Conclusion: The discussion reveals a number of strong between Britain and Australia in the areas of OHS and culture related to it. Australia has a more detailed legal framework to ensure workplace safety. Britain too has a very apparently strong OHS framework. However, both the nations exploit their migrant workers and violate their respective OHS laws in force. However, the comparison on the basis of industrial culture revealed that the industrial culture of Australia is more hazardous in nature due to its dominant mining sector.
